4 Generations of One Family – In Finnish Folk Dresses

This was a pleasure – four generations in dresses from their ancestral homes – Keuru and Southern Karelia.

Another Lake Shoot

I have to admit, it can be really refreshing to shoot adults now and then. This is Mari – and she is every inch the naturalist and environmentalist. I wanted these images to reflect that beautiful nature of hers – both inside and out.

Sure, you could put it away in a box and hope your daughter or daughter in law won’t be horrified by the ‘out of date’ style when it comes time to pass it on. Or, instead, you can put it to great use today and do a fashion shoot in unusual locations. Why not send it out in style by running it through blueberry bushes or floating it in a crystal clear Finnish lake.

A Cygnet, Squirrel, Crow, and Pigeon

I don’t think I’ll be getting into wildlife photography any time soon

And because I never want to be accused of not having a sense of humor, I had a little fun post processing a really boring shot of a squirrel on a rock (my personal stalker – he loves me!)

I know, I don’t do them often enough. My philosophy on head shots must be that it seems a shame to not get all the wonderful nature and beauty of Finland in every single shot. But on a beautiful sunny day, who can resist backlighting in black and white? I’ll console myself that these still have nature in them with all that bright sunlight!
Scary!

Locations North of Helsinki

These were shot over a five hour period in the small villages north of Helsinki. The differences between the images are all attributable to the changing light of the day. It was overcast and then sunny – often within minutes as the clouds moved overhead. By the end of the day, we caught some of that beautiful sunset that lasts four hours during the long Summer days.

I always try to incorporate the texture of the location I am shooting into the actual shots themselves. This particular texture, one of my favorites, is from a surprising source (shh, it’s a secret!)

This was a fun challenge – the lighting is so dramatically different throughout the entire area. Adding to the difficulty were storm clouds moving in and out of sunshine. One minute the light would be perfect and then the next it would change completely. But who wants a boring shoot?

I processed this one a bit different. It seemed such a dreamy picture that it cried out for a different type of treatment.

Kids will be kids!

A shoot enjoying the all too brief warm days of Summer.
