I’ve just started to go through this session, for fashion designer Basia Malinowska. How can you not love anything shot in New York City, especially with a beautiful model in Summer linen?

Magda and Surfers Paradise

In a small rocky jut of land, equidistant from the skyscrapers of Surfers Paradise and the moderate buildings of Currumbin, lies a little piece of paradise. We brought the lovely Magda out for an ethereal sunset shoot in the cool Australian Winter.

Of course, variety is always the aim for me – how can I take the same model, same location, same make up and clothing and make each image distinct, different, and yet interesting in its own right. It’s a challenge – one I hope I rose to in this particular session!

It Always Comes Down To The Light

Metering, composition, ASA, Aperature, Shutter Speed, focus, composition, connection…. no matter how much there is to learn to make good professional portraiture, it really all does come down to the light. If you find the right light, everything else is academic and the result can be pure magic.

Endless Blue and White

There is a reason the national flag of Finland is blue and white – and never is that more evident than along the Baltic coastline.

Here, model Heidi Moijanen is wearing a 60 year old Japanese wedding kimono (shiromoku) at a stretch of beach outside of Helsinki. Hair and makeup was done by Cemille Nismetdin and I was fortunate to have a great assistant in the form of Richard Hernigle. And he had his hands full not only keeping the lighting rig from blowing away a la Mary Poppins but also keeping the wind-damaged umbrella open enough to spread light onto Heidi.

And Heidi was amazing – modeling to perfection despite gale force winds and a frigid -10c along the sea. She’s also standing nearly knee deep in heavy snow yet still manages to look elegant.

Oftimes shooting in Winter can be a bit more difficult; but the beautiful soft feel of blues and whites truly make for extraordinary imagery.

Commercial Work: Vintage Clothing Shoot

I was pleased to work with the lovely model Heidi for a vintage clothing shoot.

The first session she modeled a 1974 Bernard Freres shantung silk couture dress in the Chinoisiere style. She also modeled a 1964 Myer Kahan mod-style dinner suit.

Updating a Modeling Portfolio

These images are of the lovely model Elyon. She braved the late Finnish Summer sun (11:00 pm) for wonderful shots at sunset. I tried to give her a variety of styles to show her versatility. All clothing in these shoots are antique (1890s) or vintage (1960s), from the shoes to the bustle cage under the bustle dresses.
