A Return To the Desert

I was very pleased to shoot this family again in Las Vegas.  We had to time it around my Masterclass at the big WPPI convention but were fortunate to find a great time later in the evening.

I found a great location in the Center of the City – just a block from the end of a McCarran International airport runway.  We found a great feature wall perfect for a portrait.

Commercial Shoot: Tinttu.com

Tinttu.com and I first contracted several years ago to photograph their product lines.  I absolutely adore their childrens clothing – designed by the very talented Petronella Grahn.  All of the clothing has such a distinct foothold in the folklore and history of Finland, its forest, and its epic poems.  Friendly trolls and witches, whimsical fairies, and sweet woodland creatures.  It’s a beautiful reminder for us not to lose that joy and wonder of childhood.

If you’ve never seen Petrenella’s work, I encourage you to explore tinttu.com!

The Spring Thaw

The snow is finally receding in Helsinki and we emerge once again to the promise of a beautiful Finnish Summer.

A Little Steampunk Fun

I love the Steampunk genre and couldn’t wait to get out and shoot some of my antique Victorian clothing collection. Everything except the goggles is antique – the dress itself dates to 1881, the trunks to the turn of the century, and the surveying equipment to early last century.

I was fortunate to have model Angel Goa, who ended up being the perfect size and height for the styling of the shoot.  She fit the ensemble perfectly, without need of bustles or pins.  An antique Finnish top hat and veil in the back, along with welding goggles and steampunk costume goggles, completed the ensemble.

Make up/hair beautifully done by Anu Hämäläinen at sostylish.net.

Pyry and a WWI Era Set

I was fortunate to have seasoned international model Pyry available to shoot in vintage WWI gear in the Ajaton Joki studio this week.  We scruffied him up a bit to give a bit more of a battle worn but still defiant look, which he easily brought to the table.  Make up/hair ably done by Anu Hämäläinen at sostylish.net.

1930s Era Themed Session

Winter always means plenty of studio work.

This shoot featured a vintage 1930s era bias cut velvet dress with a long train, a vintage head piece, and even vintage shoes correct to the era purchased from a great store across the street from Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.

Sneak Peek: SouthWest Florida Sessions

Before heading off to Las Vegas and Boston, I was fortunate enough to be asked to do a small private workshop in SouthWest Florida.  Here is a sneak peek from two of the sessions.

Commercial Work: Unstoppable Gorg!

In November, I was hired to create the promo and cut scenes for the computer game Unstoppable Gorg.  The game was released this week to great reviews – available on the Ipad/iphone and on your Mac/PC.

The brief for the contract was to find and cast models and create a very vintage 1950s science fiction B-Movie appeal.  I had some great contracts from my model work in the past and immediately hired LouLou D’vil, a burlesque dancer who recently finished second in the World Burlesque competition. She was perfect for the story’s psychic plant seductress from another planet.  The rest of the actors fell into place quickly and we found ourselves doing a full day shoot at the Ajaton Joki studio.  Then I raided my costume closet for capes, necklaces, vintage dresses, pearls, cheap crowns, etc. and together with amazing work by the client’s art team, we had ourselves a session ready to go!

12 hours later, gigs of video and promo shots taken, and one messy studio produced some great footage ready for the vintaging.  My client took the raw videos and put together some great (and cute!) cut scenes and intro videos for the game.  This was easily the most fun I’ve ever had producing commercial work – certainly the most fun working at my studio!

In Celebration of a Military Veteran

This gentlemen served in several wars, including WWII.  It was my pleasure to photograph him in vintage WWI gear and in front of authentic antique war planes (that still fly regularly!).  These were shot at the Bellingham, Washington, Flight Museum.

He really wanted to tell a story about the pilots who brought their dogs with them on missions and brought a neighbor’s pet.
